Domain Names

A Domain Name is the name that your organisation is known by on the internet. It is has a double purpose:

• to give an address for your emails, and
• to identify your website.

If you are a non profit organisation in the UK, you would usually choose a domain name in the form myorganisation.org.uk.  Domain names like this cost just £9.00 every 2 years. Other endings are possible, e.g. a UK company would usually have a co.uk ending.

Endings of .com and .org are also possible among many others, but are more expensive. There are no regulations that insist you have to select a certain type of domain name, if it is available, we can register it for you.

Once you have a domain name you can use it to communicate with your users via email. An organisation would use multiple email addresses in the form of This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. For smaller organisations (up to 10 email addresses) we recommend using the googleapps service which combines all the security and additional services of gmail with the convenience of using your own domain name. The service itself is free, we make a small charge for setting it up and showing you how to manage your email accounts. If you want us to manage these accounts we can do that as well.

Larger organisations will probably want to use in-house email services like Microsoft Exchange/Outlook, etc. We can also install and manage these, please contact us for details.

Webhosting

To promote your services on the web, you need a website. To have a website, you need to have a webhosting service. This is basically rented space on the internet which holds the data and computer systems that make up your website (words, pictures, databases, etc.). Web designers usually include webhosting costs in their website maintenance charges. However, if you are having a website designed for you by a volunteer, or want to do it yourself, you will need to need to purchase webhosting services separately.
